New York - Day 5

In the morning we went, yet again, to Pret A Manger for breakfast after which we went down to the Liberty Ferry's dock and got on the ferry to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. After a short, smooth trip we arrived at Liberty Island, picked up our audio tour sets and moved on to the central flag to discuss our plan for the morning. Me and my dad went to the base of the pedastal from the statue before climbing to the top of the pedastal for a view of the opposite Manhattan and the, soon to be explored, Ellis Island. We returned to the open square at the bottom of the statue, walked around the base of the statue whilst listening to facts and storys about the leading architects which designed this icon. After sitting for a while we got on to the next ferry headed for Ellis Island. Here is what we saw so far.

Once we arrived off of the ferry from the Statue of Liberty we headed into the Ellis Island Museum. For those that aren't aware Ellis Island was used to control immigration in the last century(especially), it has now been transformed into a museum with exhibits surrounding this topic. We soon got our audio headsets and got on with our tour, we started on the bottom floor learning about the passed history of American immigrants and how they made there way through the process. On the second floor there were exhibits made around the more recent migrants coming from Ireland(mostly) and how they passed all the required medical tests(to prevent disease from spreading). Here is what we saw.

After we visited both of the Islands we headed to brooklyn for a pizza lunch. We saw the Brooklyn bridge and headed home, on the way seeing a superstar from Fox.

Later that night we went to the Top of the Rock "exhibition" in the Rockefeller Centre where we saw, mainly, 360 degree views of the New York City skyline. It was very good but my expectations were too high, I expected more than just a view, although a good view. Later we went back to our abode and went to sleep ready for our second Broadway musical of our time in NYC, NY tomorrow.

  1. Just back from an afternoon walk with your grandad and we both said we missed your company but you are doing your fair share in the USA . I believe your granddad's grandfathers 2 sisters and a brother may have gone to Ellis Island - they went to America in 1870s, while William and 2 other sisters came here. The views on the ferry are rely good - something I've not seen from that viewpoint before. Hope you had a good rest before your evening out .

  2. Meant to say I love the photo of you and Bart together- a strong resemblance ! Also checked and your great great grandfather Hackett went to New York but after a period went back to Ireland before coming to NZ so I wonder if he went to Ellis island too. Guessing your are or have done some driving it will be interesting to hear what it's like if you get "off the beaten track" as we say.
